a scent is a scent

February 9, 2012 in found

Not really.  A scent is not just a scent. It evokes memories, happiness, pain and every other emotions associated with the scent.  The scent of Chicken Noodle soup reminds me of my mother.  She would normally make me soup whenever I’m sick.  Amarige de Givenchy reminds me of my one true love. And this soy candle, as amazing as a discount window, evokes a memory of an era.  Each scent captures memories of a certain place in New York, particularly iconic intersections, like this one below.

 front the site:

“The Beats were known for their black tights, adoration for saucy jazz, and for being somewhat nomadic and detached in their physical being, but also in their spiritual and mental being. The original leaders of the hipsters created not only an accepting world for other artistic-types, but also sought out their own escapades, even if they seemed float through the world. ”

tempted

February 8, 2012 in design chic

I’m really tempted to paint my walls white.  It just looks so fresh, light and yes, minimalist.  Plus everything you put inside a white-walled house looks freakishly amazing.  Here are photos to validate my observation…

handwriting series

February 4, 2012 in design chic, project

Admit it, we don’t write as much as we used to.  I noticed this when I made a reviewer for my daughter two weeks ago.  My right hand was shaking after I’d written a full page of questionnaire.  We are now so used to doing everything easy.  With the help the computer, iPhone, IPad and other gadgets, we’ve successfully managed to erase what was left of the art of handwriting.  Yes, I consider it an art.  This is a direct result of technology.  But that’s just too sad. What’s next?  Painting, handweaving and more would be replaced with digital prints and outputs.  The only thing I like about technology is one of these rfid blocking wallets. At least I’m confident technology won’t take away what’s left of identity.

etsy finds: owl gloves

February 1, 2012 in etsy finds

Twelve hours into February and I find myself overwhelmed with so many backlogs and additional errands.  What are the chances I can finish this before the deadline?  Busy-ness is definitely kicking in right now.  And I’ve been sidetracked once again, doing less important things when I should be up and above my immediate goals.  I don’t know.  I’m just thinking out loud here.  I promise I won’t be sidetracked anymore.  One exception is if there’s a Golden Eagle gold bullion involved. Now, who in his right mind would not get sidetracked by something as precious as gold?

And on that note, I give you my owl.

restaurant tour: chef tatung’s garden cafe

January 30, 2012 in restaurant tour

Oh, what a beautiful cafe. I’m actually in love with the antique capiz window/shutters.  The space is filled with interesting objects and paintings.  Books of every genre are available for guests to read.  I wonder if they’re for sale, too.  I found one that I would really love to read during my free time.

To say the cafe exudes personality is an understatement.  The place is perhaps as interesting as the chef owner.  I already know that the food is amazing.  Too bad we didn’t get a chance to talk to Chef Tatung and ask him the inspiration for the place.  I heard he was a production designer before becoming a chef and opening a restaurant.

By the way, special crush on the camera…

hotel visit: endemico resguardo silvestre

January 25, 2012 in architecture, hotel visit, travel

Incredibly beautiful is this hotel along the sloping terrain of Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico.  It’s actually a group or cluster of hotel rooms.  Each room is detached from one another, supported and held only by steel stilts.

The hotel concept and design is by Gracia Studio, a San Diego-based design house.  Each vista has a panoramic view of the valley, a personal entry door, patio and fireplace.
